Is the Tapo C260 worth it?

4K indoors sounds like overkill and stops sounding like it the moment you try to read something across a large room. The extra pixels are what survive digital zoom.

Full 360 degree pan with 116 degrees of vertical travel covers an open-plan floor from one mounting point, and 18x zoom means the recorded frame holds up when you magnify it rather than dissolving into blocks.

Everything said about indoor cameras elsewhere on this site applies harder here, because a 4K camera that can turn and zoom is a capable surveillance device pointed at your own family. Local storage, a unique password and two-factor authentication are not optional on a camera like this.

When 4K indoors is worth it

4K pays off indoors in one situation: a large open-plan room watched from one corner, where you need to read something on the far side after the fact. The extra pixels are what survive digital zoom on a recording. In a small bedroom 2K already resolves everything useful, and the C210P2 two-pack costs less than this one camera.

The listing makes a point of on-device AI, meaning detection runs on the camera rather than on a server, and of privacy zones that block recording in parts of the frame. Both matter more on a 4K camera that pans, because it is a capable surveillance device pointed at your own household. 4K also fills a card four times faster than 1080p, so the storage numbers below are worth a look before you buy the card.

What it costs to keep running

Plan fees for the Tapo C260 over five years: $0, because it keeps its own footage; the only thing to add is a high-endurance microSD card.

With a 128 GB card the Tapo C260 holds about 3 days of round-the-clock 4K footage, or about 4 months if it only records motion (about 40 minutes of clips a day).

Different card or recording mode? The storage calculator uses the same assumptions.
