What actually matters here

If you typed CCTV rather than security camera, this is probably the page you wanted.

A CCTV system is a recorder plus cameras on cable. The recorder holds a hard drive, writes continuously, and keeps working with the internet unplugged. That is the whole proposition, and nothing wireless replicates it.

PoE is the part that makes modern systems manageable: one network cable per camera carries both power and video, up to about 330 feet. You are not running mains to each camera position, which is what made older installations a specialist job.

Size the drive to the retention you want rather than the number that sounds generous. Four 4K cameras recording continuously write roughly 170 GB a day between them, so a 2 TB drive holds about twelve days before it loops. The storage calculator on this site will do it for your own camera count.

The honest downside is the install. Budget a weekend or a contractor, and decide before you buy whether you are willing to put holes in the building. If you are not, a wireless kit is the right answer and you should stop comparing them with this on specification alone.
