The best wireless security cameras

Wireless means two different things, and buying the wrong one is the most common mistake in this category.

What actually matters here

Wireless means two different things, and buying the wrong one is the most common mistake in this category.

A Wi-Fi camera has no data cable but still needs power. A battery camera has neither. Listings use wireless for both, and the difference decides where the camera can actually go.

Battery cameras record events, not time. They sleep, wake on motion, and by the time recording starts the first fraction of a second is gone. For most households that is acceptable. For anyone who needs to know what happened during a window of time rather than what triggered a sensor, it is not, and no battery camera on the market solves it.

Signal is the other thing to check before buying. A camera at the end of a garden is often two walls and forty feet from the router, and a weak link shows up as cameras that drop out at night rather than as an obvious error. Solar panels and a mesh node are cheaper than discovering this after the mounting holes are drilled.
