Is the Tapo C402 worth it?

180 days is the headline, and like every battery claim it assumes light use. The number that matters is how often it triggers, which is why the activity zones in this listing are the feature to set up on day one rather than an extra.

It takes a microSD card up to 512 GB, so the footage can stay on the camera. Tapo Care exists as a cloud option and is not required for the camera to do its job.

1080p across an outdoor scene is enough to tell you a person was there and usually not enough to tell you which person. Put this where you need to know that something happened, and put a 2K camera where you need to know who.

Zones are the battery setting

Every battery figure is really a trigger-count figure. The 180 day claim assumes the camera is mostly asleep. The way to get anywhere near it is to define activity zones so the camera ignores the road, the hedge moving and next door's cat.

1080p is the honest limit here. Across a garden it will tell you a person was present. It will not reliably tell you which person, and no amount of digital zoom recovers detail the sensor never captured. Put this where presence is the question.

What it costs to keep running

Plan fees for the Tapo C402 over five years: $0, because it keeps its own footage; the only thing to add is a high-endurance microSD card.

With a 128 GB card, the Tapo C402 at 1080p and about 40 minutes of clips a day holds more than a year before the oldest clips are overwritten.

Different card or recording mode? The storage calculator uses the same assumptions.
