The best security cameras for an apartment

What actually matters here

Renting changes the problem from which camera to which camera can go up and come down without costing you a deposit.

Nothing here needs a hole. Battery cameras sit on shelves, clamp to railings or mount on adhesive plates. A doorbell can hang on the existing bracket if there is one, or run on battery if there is not.

The constraint renters underestimate is what the camera can legally see. In a shared building a camera covering a communal hallway records your neighbours going about their lives, which is a different proposition from covering your own front path and is restricted in many leases as well as by law in some places. Point it at your own door and your own space.

Audio deserves the same caution, more so in a building with thin walls. A camera inside your flat that records conversations through a party wall is a problem you do not want. Turn audio off unless you have a specific reason for it.

Local storage matters here for a practical reason as well as a privacy one: if you move, a camera that stores on a card comes with you and keeps working. A camera tied to a base station fixed to the building is a different kind of purchase.
