Is the Tapo MagCam C460 worth it?

Almost every battery camera is 2.4 GHz only, and in a dense neighbourhood that band is a traffic jam. Dual-band is the quiet feature here and the reason this camera appears on a list rather than being another 4K body.

The night vision switches itself: infrared monochrome by default, flipping to full colour when motion is detected. That is a sensible default, because colour costs light and light costs battery.

The magnetic mount is convenient and is also how the camera leaves. Use the screw fixing for anything reachable, and keep the magnet for positions where a ladder is already required.

Battery 4K, and what that costs you

4K on a battery camera is a deliberate compromise. The listing claims up to 200 days from a 10,000 mAh cell, which is a best case with few triggers, and 4K clips use more of that battery and more of the card than 2K ones would. The magnetic base and the optional solar panel are what make the battery figure practical.

Dual-band Wi-Fi is the quiet advantage. Battery cameras end up at the edges of a property, which is exactly where 5 GHz fades, and being able to fall back to 2.4 GHz keeps it connected. One oddity worth knowing: the listing calls it both the MagCam and the SolarCam in different bullets, so check the exact model name in the cart before ordering.

What it costs to keep running

Plan fees for the Tapo MagCam C460 over five years: $0, because it keeps its own footage; the only thing to add is a high-endurance microSD card.

With a 128 GB card, the Tapo MagCam C460 at 4K and about 40 minutes of clips a day holds about 4 months before the oldest clips are overwritten.

Different card or recording mode? The storage calculator uses the same assumptions.
