Tapo vs Wyze

The two brands fighting over the bottom of the market, with nearly identical specifications and very different parent companies.

The short version

On hardware there is little in it. Both offer 2K or better, weatherproofing, card slots and spotlights at around thirty dollars, and both have broad assistant support.

The separation is corporate. Tapo is TP-Link's smart home line, backed by a company whose main business is networking hardware. Wyze is a smaller operation that has had publicised security incidents, including users briefly seeing thumbnails from other households.

If the camera is going outdoors on a shed, that history matters less. If it is going in a bedroom or a nursery, it is a reasonable basis for choosing Tapo. Either way, record locally and use a unique password.

Range is the second difference. Tapo sells a far wider line, from a $24 indoor pan-tilt up to a 4K outdoor camera that turns through a full circle, and the naming is impenetrable enough that checking the form factor matters more than checking the model number. Wyze concentrates on fewer products and iterates them.

On subscriptions both behave similarly: live view and local recording are free, person detection and event history are where the plan sits. Neither nags heavily if you decline, and both take microSD cards, which is the configuration to use.

Eight Tapo cameras are ranked on this site against one Wyze. That reflects how wide the Tapo range is rather than a verdict on Wyze: the v4 remains about the most camera you can buy for thirty dollars.
