Is the aosu 5MP Video Doorbell worth it?
Drawn for this site. Not a product photo.
Doorbells are where subscriptions bite hardest, because the thing you want from a doorbell is the recording and that is exactly what the free tier usually withholds. This one ships with a base station holding 8 GB and a stated 60-day loop.
The detection stack is unusual at this price: the listing describes radar plus PIR infrared plus AI person recognition working together, which is aimed squarely at the false alerts that make people turn notifications off. 5MP across 166 degrees is more sensor than most doorbells carry.
It runs on battery or hardwired. Hardwire it if you have the transformer, because a doorbell that dies in February is a doorbell you will stop trusting.
Hardwire it if you can
The dual power design means you can run it on battery, and you will be happier if you do not. A doorbell is the most-triggered camera on any house, and a battery doorbell in December is a doorbell that dies at the worst time.
If you have an existing wired chime, the transformer is usually already there. Check its rating against the listing before ordering; underpowered transformers are the most common cause of doorbells that reboot when the chime rings.
What it costs to keep running
Plan fees for the aosu 5MP Video Doorbell over five years: $0, because it keeps its own footage; the storage is in the base station that comes in the box.
The aosu 5MP Video Doorbell base station holds 8 GB. At 5MP, with about 40 minutes of clips a day, that is about 11 days of history. The listing's own retention figure assumes fewer triggers than that.
Different card or recording mode? The storage calculator uses the same assumptions.
