What this feature really means
Local storage comes in three shapes. A microSD card in the camera is cheapest and holds least. A base station serving several cameras holds more and survives one camera failing. A recorder with a hard drive holds weeks and records continuously.
All three share the property that matters: the footage exists without anyone else's servers, keeps existing if you stop paying anything, and is still there if the maker goes out of business or drops support for your model. That last scenario is not hypothetical in this category.
Buy high-endurance cards. A security camera rewrites the same cells continuously, which ordinary cards are not designed for, and the failure is usually silent: the camera looks like it is recording and the footage is not there when you need it.
