The best security cameras for a small business

The requirements change the moment the footage includes staff and customers.

What actually matters here

Three things change when a camera is in a business rather than a home. Retention becomes a requirement rather than a preference, because an incident may not surface for weeks. Continuous recording becomes close to mandatory, because event-triggered clips leave gaps that are useless in a dispute. And the people in frame are mostly not you, which brings obligations that home installations do not have.

That combination points at a recorder with a large drive rather than any wireless kit. Work the retention backwards: decide how many days you need to be able to go back, then size the drive, rather than buying the system and discovering it loops in nine days. The storage calculator on this site does the arithmetic.

Signage is not decoration. In many places a visible notice is part of what makes recording lawful, particularly for audio, and employees generally have to be told that recording takes place and why. Rules vary by jurisdiction and some sectors have specific requirements.

None of this is legal advice, and a small business is exactly the situation where fifteen minutes with someone qualified is worth more than any buying guide.
